The Squat (May – August 2010)
During the night of Whitsunday, May 25th, 2010, activists squatted the site of a
planned factory farm slaughterhouse in Wietze near Celle. Since then the
activists have been trying to develop a way of life free of hierarchies,
while also offering a platform where discussions, networking, and
protest actions can take place.
The construction of the slaughterhouse has not yet passed the final
stages of approval and can still be stopped! The squat was growing daily
and offered room for all those who wanted to stand in the way of the
exploitation of the environment, humans, and nonhuman animals. Within
the framework of our protest, a Skillsharing Camp has been planned for
July, 9th through the 11th and a Protest Week for July 30th through
August, 8th. After being very popular with these two events, eviction came
swiftly on August 11th. For 15 finally chained up activists (including one
locked-on in a entirely buried caravan), police needed about 12 hours.
From the same day’s evening on to weeks after there has been a lot of
solidarity actions all over germany and partly beyond that.
The Skill Sharing Camp
Skill sharing means the exchange of skills and abilities and, more
specifically in our case, to cultivate and further develop these skills
in order to use them in a diverse, creative protest. From street theatre
to blockade techniques, every idea is welcome. The program follows a
D.I.Y. Ideal; so just bring your own ideas for workshops, etc. and join in!
The Protest Week
Our main focus during the protest week was the planning and execution of
protest actions. But also workshops, lectures, and discussions about
(industrial) animal exploitation and more was able to take place.
On the last weekend there was a large networking meeting against factory farms,
to which the citzens‘ groups in Wietze invited other citzens‘ initiatives and
all those interested. Also the vegan Volxküche throughout the week and
nightly cultural programs made poeple sure, this protest was not for nothing.
